It’s a pleasure to welcome you to my blog! My name is Maria, I am a professional musician, I play several musical instruments and I am the lead singer of a rock band.
In this blog I talk about what genres of music exist, describe them in detail and introduce you to new trends. A musical genre is a generally accepted category that defines certain pieces of music as belonging to a common tradition or set of conventions. It should be distinguished from musical form and musical style, although in practice these terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Recently, scholars have argued that the classification of music by genre is inaccurate and outdated.
Music can be categorized into different genres in different ways. The artistic nature of music means that these classifications are often subjective and contradictory, and some genres may overlap. There are even different academic definitions of the term genre itself.
In his book Form in Tonal Music, Douglas M. Green distinguishes between genre and form. He lists madrigal, motet, canzone, ricercar and dance as examples of Renaissance genres.
